sockets and rune affixes
The rules
Runes are made by Runecraft from keystones and Ink; each carries one affix family (kit affix_families) and a letter (24 letters in the runic set, folk register: Ash, Birch, Thorn, Oak…).
Gear has 0–3 sockets (Smithing/Jewelcraft add sockets; High Quality (HQ) gear has more). Socketing is permanent unless a Salvager breaks the item to its core.
Lines: specific letter sequences across an item's sockets spell a Line and unlock a hidden effect ("Thorn-Ash-Oak" → Bramble Line: attackers are Bound on crit). Lines are never listed; they are found in the Ledger's archived pages, in Draft relics (SYS-27), in Warden lore reveals, and by trying. A found Line can be written into a Note.
Runes are consumed on socketing; the market for letters is the market for Lines.

There is more to this system than the rules above. Nobody has registered a discovery yet.
